Il 17 giugno, la deputata Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, democratica di New York, ha pubblicato un video in diretta Instagram in cui parla dei campi di detenzione lungo il confine sud degli Stati Uniti definiti “campi di concentramento” e usando la frase “Mai più”.

Il giorno seguente tutto questo si è attirato le aspre critiche della Rappresentante Liz Cheney, repubblicana del Wyoming, e di altri per presunta appropriazione indebita di uno slogan associato all’Olocausto. Il 24 giugno, dopo diversi giorni di acceso dibattito mediatico e politico, l’US Holocaust Memorial Museum ha rilasciato una dichiarazione con cui condanna l’uso di analogie con l’Olocausto. Abbiamo ricevuto la seguente lettera aperta indirizzata al direttore del museo, Sara J. Bloomfield, consegnata dai firmatari il

Al direttore Bloomfield:

Siamo studiosi che sostengono con forza l’United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Molti di noi scrivono sull’Olocausto e sul genocidio; abbiamo studiato nella biblioteca e negli archivi dell’USHMM o prestato servizio come borsisti o studiosi associati; siamo stati grati per il supporto e la comunione intellettuale del museo. Molti di noi insegnano l’Olocausto nelle nostre università e hanno attinto alle risorse online del Museo. Sosteniamo i programmi del museo dai workshop all’istruzione.
Siamo profondamente preoccupati per la recente “dichiarazione del museo riguardo la sua posizione sulle analogie con l’Olocausto”. Scriviamo questa lettera pubblica per sollecitarne la ritrattazione.
Gli studiosi di scienze umane e sociali contano su analisi, contestualizzazione, confronto e argomentazione attenti e responsabili per rispondere a domande sul passato e sul presente. Con “il rifiutare inequivocabilmente gli sforzi per creare analogie tra l’Olocausto e altri eventi, sia storici che contemporanei,” l’US Holocaust Memorial Museum sta assumendo una posizione radicale ben lontana dalle tradizionali borse di studio sull’Olocausto e sul genocidio. E rende quasi impossibile l’apprendimento dal passato.

La decisione del Museo di rifiutare completamente di tracciare possibili analogie con l’Olocausto o con gli eventi che lo hanno preceduto, è fondamentalmente astorica. Ha il potenziale di infliggere gravi danni alla capacità del Museo di proseguire nel suo ruolo di istituzione credibile, di guida mondiale dedicata alla memoria dell’Olocausto, all’educazione all’Olocausto e alla ricerca nel campo degli studi sull’Olocausto e sul genocidio. Il nucleo centrale dell’educazione all’Olocausto è di mettere in guardia il pubblico da sviluppi pericolosi che facilitano le violazioni dei diritti umani, dolore e sofferenza; puntare a somiglianze nel tempo e nello spazio è essenziale per questo compito.

Guardando oltre il contesto accademico, siamo ben consapevoli delle molte distorsioni e imprecisioni, intenzionali o meno, che inquadrano le discussioni contemporanee sull’Olocausto. Non siamo solo studiosi. Siamo cittadini globali che partecipano al discorso pubblico, così come il Museo come istituzione, e il suo staff.

Riteniamo pertanto essenziale che l’US Holocaust Memorial Museum inverta la sua posizione su un’attenta analisi e confronto storici. Ci auguriamo che il Museo continui ad aiutare gli studiosi a stabilire l’importanza dell’Olocausto come un evento da cui il mondo deve continuare a imparare.
