Questi recenti, terribili giorni hanno visto – in diversi paesi europei – una chiusura e un arresto degli eventi culturali che promuovono l’arte, le voci e le storie palestinesi.
C’è stato il sindaco di Choisy-le-Roi che ha bloccato la messa in scena dello spettacolo teatrale “And Here I Am”, scritto da Hassan Abdulrazzak, basato sulla storia di formazione dell’attore-regista Ahmed Tobasi, nato a Jenin durante la prima Intifada. C’è stata l’interruzione del lancio del libro “Un giorno nella vita di Abed Salama” a Londra, fermato per “problemi di sicurezza”.
E alla Fiera del Libro di Francoforte – la più grande e importante fiera internazionale del libro, che si terrà dal 18 al 23 ottobre – hanno chiuso lo spazio ad Adania Shibli e al suo romanzo ‘Un dettaglio minore”, rilasciando allo stesso tempo una dichiarazione in cui affermavano “totale solidarietà con Israele” e di voler rendere le voci ebraiche e israeliane “particolarmente visibili alla fiera”.
In risposta alla chiusura dello spazio per le voci letterarie palestinesi, all’ingiusta affermazione che Adania Shibli fosse stata consultata nel prendere questa decisione, agli attacchi al romanzo di Shibli sulla stampa tedesca, abbiamo preparato una lettera di sostegno per Adania Shibli, per ‘Un minore dettaglio’ e per l’importanza delle voci letterarie palestinesi alla Fiera del Libro di Francoforte e oltre. Negli ultimi due giorni è circolata principalmente da un account di posta elettronica all’altro, ricevendo firme che includevano i premi Nobel Abdulrazak Gurnah, Annie Ernaux e Olga Tokarczuk; i vincitori del Booker Prize Anne Enright, Richard Flanagan e Ian McEwan; la vincitrice del premio Litprom 2021 Pilar Quintana e la vincitrice del 2015 Madeleine Thien; decine di editori e agenti letterari; così come molti scrittori preoccupati da tutto il mondo. Attualmente i firmatari sono più di 1.300.
LA LETTERA APERTA
Gli eventi scioccanti e tragici che hanno avuto inizio il 7 ottobre e che sono in corso oggi hanno avuto ripercussioni in tutto il mondo, anche nel mondo dell’editoria. La pluripremiata scrittrice palestinese Adania Shibli, finalista al National Book Award 2020 per il suo libro Minor Detail (New Directions / Fitzcarraldo, traduzione di Elisabeth Jaquette), stava per ricevere il LiBeraturpreis 2023 della Germania per lo stesso libro, pubblicato in tedesco come ‘Eine Nebensache’ (Berenberg Verlag, tradotto da Günther Orth) alla Fiera del Libro di Francoforte 2023, che inizia questa settimana.
Il 13 ottobre, gli organizzatori del premio Litprom, finanziato in parte dal governo tedesco e da Frankfurt Book Fair, hanno rilasciato un comunicato in cui affermavano che la cerimonia di premiazione non avrebbe più avuto luogo alla fiera del libro.
Inoltre, è stato cancellato un dibattito pubblico alla fiera del libro con Adania Shibli e il suo traduttore Günther Orth.
La dichiarazione originariamente diceva che questa decisione era stata presa d’accordo con l’autrice, ed era stata poi ripresa, senza verifica, in un articolo del New York Times (ora corretto). Questo non è vero, Adania Shibli ha reso noto che la decisione non è stata presa d’accordo con lei, la decisione le è stata presentata. Se la cerimonia avesse avuto luogo, ha detto, avrebbe colto l’occasione per riflettere sul ruolo della letteratura in questi tempi crudeli e dolorosi.
